We have prepared special guided tours of Lodz for the EAHIL 2025 Workshop participants:
ABC of Lodz
Guide: Justyna Tomaszewska
We will start and end our walk at the former Izrael Poznański factory (now Andel’s Hotel). During the tour we will learn about the beginnings of industrial life in Lodz. From there we will walk to Wolności Square and then along the legendary Piotrkowska Street – passing charming tenement houses, atmospheric courtyards, artistic murals, the Rose Crossing and other interesting places. Finally, in the Old Town Park we will see the ‘Eye of the Herring’ (you will find out what it is!). The guide will talk about the history of the city, open-air film screenings, literature and everyday life in Lodz, showing its true face.
TURN AND FACE THE STRANGE
Guide: Krzysztof Olkusz | Absolutnie Turystycznie
Łódź is a city undergoing many changes – it is fascinating and exciting to see how the post-industrial heritage is regaining its importance with the current taste of architecture design. During this walk you will experience the process of change, supported by the stories of the city’s multicultural history with a touch the cinematic face of Łódź – after all, this UNESCO City of Film is anything but a coincidence called HollyŁódź!
INDUSTRIAL ŁÓDŹ AND MULTICULTURAL ŁÓDŹ – THE CORE OF THE CITY IDENTITY
Guide: Milena Wicepolska
Until the 19th century, Łódź was a small farming town surrounded by forests and rivers. Under Russian rule and the Industrial Revolution, it grew into a major textile center: fields gave way to red-brick factories and smokestacks. Workers of Polish, German, Jewish and Russian origins flocked here, creating a multicultural city whose diverse heritage still shines in its architecture.
Meet at Anna Poznańska’s palace (ul. Kościuszki 4), now the Medical University, then follow the old factories, synagogues, churches and industrialists’ mansions. We’ll end our walk at Manufaktura, formerly Izrael Poznański’s palace.
THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL
Guide: Monika Dąbrowska
This tour will be a tribute to the micro and macro stories associated with Łódź.
From coping with the particularities of life in an industrial city, to the search for a better future, to changes in the fields of science, health and beauty. Stories with no names and big names. From scientists (Ary Sternfeld) to artists (Arthur Rubinstein) and everyone in between: women fearlessly entering previously male-dominated professions and Hollywood game changers.
PRESENTING ART AND SCIENCE. MUSEUMS, STREET ART AND PRESENTING CULTURE THROUGH THE DECADES
Guide: Magdalena Makówka
During the tour, we will visit the places where the first museums in Łódź were located. We will find out what they presented to the public and where we can see art today. There will be no shortage of anecdotes about artists associated with the city. During the walk, we’ll also get to know Łódź Street Art and find out that Łódź is a city of murals.
ŁÓDŹ – A CITY OF WOMEN
Guide: Iza Olejnik
Lodz was a city with a clear preponderance of women, employed as weavers, spinners, teachers, doctors and social activists, who gave it an industrial character and enriched the city’s literature and art. Such a high percentage of working women in industry and education gave rise to specific social problems, thanks to which Lodz is sometimes referred to as ‘the city of women’. During the walk, you will learn about the fates of prominent women connected with Łódź and discover the fascinating stories hidden under the slogan ‘Łódź – a city of women’.
Lodz is a city that captivates with its unique atmosphere and dynamic development. Former factories transformed into cultural centres, charming streets, and stunning murals create an unforgettable experience. Come and see for yourself – Lodz never stops evolving and inspiring!
